Brazil Reinstates Visa Requirements

Effective April 10, 2025, Brazil has reinstated visa requirements for citizens of the United States, Canada, and Australia. This change ends the visa-free entry policy that had been in place since 2019. Travelers from these countries must now obtain an electronic visa (eVisa) prior to arrival.

eVisa Application Process

The Brazilian government has introduced an online eVisa system to streamline the application process. Applicants must complete an online form, upload necessary documents, and pay a fee of USD 80.90. The eVisa is typically processed within five business days and allows stays of up to 90 days per entry.

Emphasis on Diplomatic Reciprocity

The reinstatement of visa requirements reflects Brazil's commitment to the principle of reciprocity. Brazilian citizens are still required to obtain visas to enter the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Despite efforts to negotiate mutual visa-free agreements, no changes have been made by these countries, prompting Brazil to reintroduce its visa policy.

Impact on Travelers

Travelers from the affected countries should plan accordingly, allowing sufficient time for eVisa processing before their intended departure. Failure to obtain the necessary visa may result in denied entry into Brazil. It is recommended to apply for the eVisa well in advance of travel dates to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
