Enhanced Child Benefits for 2025

The Canada Child Benefit will see a significant increase in 2025, offering more support to families
The Canadian government has announced a significant enhancement to the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), slated to take effect in mid-2025. This adjustment, effective from July 2025, represents a 2.7% increase based on inflation rates, and aims to provide substantial financial relief to families grappling with rising living costs.
The Backbone of Family Support
The Canada Child Benefit, a tax-free monthly financial aid administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), has been a cornerstone of Canada’s social safety net since its inception in July 2016. Designed to alleviate child poverty and assist with daily living expenses, the CCB supports millions of Canadian households.
For the 2025-2026 benefit year, the CCB will see maximum monthly payments reaching up to $666.42 for each child under the age of six and $562.33 for children aged six to 17. This increase aligns with the CRA’s practice of adjusting benefits in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) trends to preserve purchasing power.
Eligibility Criteria and Calculations
To qualify for the CCB, applicants must be Canadian residents for tax purposes, including citizens, permanent residents, protected persons, and eligible temporary residents. Applicants must also live with the child and be primarily responsible for their care. The CCB is available to families with children under 18, and eligibility hinges on the timely filing of annual tax returns, as the CRA calculates payments based on adjusted family net income (AFNI).
The maximum annual benefit for families earning an AFNI of $37,487 or less will be $7,997 for children under six, and $6,748 for children aged six to 17. Benefits reduce incrementally for incomes above this threshold. The CCB is calculated using a base amount adjusted for the child’s age, with reductions applied for higher income brackets.

Application Process
Families can apply for the CCB online through the CRA’s My Account portal, or by mailing completed forms to their local tax center. New parents can also apply via provincial birth registration services. Applications are processed quickly when submitted online, with payments commencing the following month and potentially including retroactive amounts for late applications.
Payment Schedule and Additional Benefits
The CCB payments are generally disbursed on the 20th of each month, with adjustments if this date falls on a weekend or holiday. In addition to the CCB, the Child Disability Benefit (CDB) offers extra support for families caring for children eligible for the disability tax credit. For the 2025-2026 benefit year, the CDB will provide an annual amount of $3,411, reflecting a 2.7% inflation adjustment.
Policy Enhancements and Provincial Synergies
A recent policy update, effective January 2025, ensures that CCB and CDB payments continue for six months following a child’s death, offering crucial financial support during such difficult times. This policy change underscores the government’s commitment to supporting families in need.
Furthermore, the CCB increase complements provincial benefits such as the BC Family Benefit, providing a comprehensive support system for low- and middle-income families across Canada.
The upcoming increase in the Canada Child Benefit signifies a crucial step in supporting families as they navigate economic pressures. By providing a robust financial safety net, the Canadian government reaffirms its dedication to child welfare and family support.
