Canada Announces Measures to Strengthen Family Reunification
Vancouver, May 26, 2023—In a significant move to bolster family unity, Canada has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at expediting the reunification process for families immigrating to the country. Recognizing the importance of familial support during pivotal life changes, the government is prioritizing the swift and seamless transition of families into Canadian society.
Key Announcements
The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, alongside the Honourable Hedy Fry, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre, introduced several new measures designed to enhance family reunification procedures:

Accelerated Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) Processing: Spousal applicants will benefit from reduced processing times, ensuring quicker reunification as families await the finalization of their permanent residence applications.

Dedicated Processing Tools: New technologies and tools have been implemented specifically for spousal TRV applicants to streamline and expedite their applications.

Open Work Permits: Spousal and family class applicants can now receive open work permits, enabling them to work in Canada as they await permanent residency. This initiative extends to dependent children residing with their sponsors in Canada.

Work Permit Extensions: Open work permit holders, including spousal applicants, whose permits expire between August 1 and the end of 2023, are eligible for an 18-month extension. This measure mirrors recent provisions extended to those with expiring post-graduation work permits.
Enhancing Family Unity and Economic Participation
Minister Fraser emphasized the government's commitment to family reunification, stating that these measures are designed to ensure families can be together sooner. The new processing tools have already yielded a promising approval rate of 93% among the initial cohort of applicants.
In addition to reuniting families, these initiatives facilitate the economic integration of newcomers. By granting open work permits, Canada empowers spouses, partners, and dependents to contribute to the workforce, thereby supporting themselves and their families during their transition.
Addressing Labour Shortages
As Canada continues to grapple with labour shortages, immigration plays a crucial role in filling these gaps. The newly announced initiatives are aligned with the Minister's mandate to fortify family reunification, thereby enabling spouses, partners, and dependent children to gain temporary resident status while awaiting permanent residency.
