Canada to Eliminate Job Offer Points in Express Entry to Reduce Fraud

The Government of Canada has announced an important update to the Express Entry system as part of its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the country’s immigration process while continuing to attract skilled talent to fuel economic growth.

What’s Changing?

Starting spring 2025, candidates in the Express Entry pool will no longer receive additional points for having a job offer. This change aims to:

  • Reduce Fraud: By removing the incentive to illegally buy or sell Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs) to improve selection chances.
  • Enhance Fairness: Ensuring all candidates are evaluated more equitably based on their skills, experience, and other qualifications.

Who Will Be Affected?

  • Candidates in the Pool: This change will apply to all candidates with job offers, as well as new applicants entering the pool after the update takes effect.
  • Current Applications: Those who have already received invitations to apply or who have applications in progress will not be affected.

Why This Matters

This update is part of Canada’s ongoing efforts to build a robust, fair, and responsive immigration system, ensuring it meets the needs of the economy while maintaining public confidence in the process.

A Statement from the Minister

“We are taking important steps to reduce fraud while continuing to attract the skilled talent our economy needs. Immigration has always been a cornerstone of Canada’s success, and we remain committed to welcoming the best and brightest to Canada so that everyone has access to the quality jobs, homes, and supports they need to thrive.”
The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick Facts

  • Express Entry is Canada’s leading immigration application system, designed for skilled individuals applying through:
    • The Federal Skilled Worker Program
    • The Federal Skilled Trades Program
    • The Canadian Experience Class
    • Portions of the Provincial Nominee Program
  • In June 2022, Canada introduced changes to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to allow for the selection of immigrants based on key attributes that align with economic priorities, such as specific work experience or language skills.

What This Means for You

If you’re considering immigrating to Canada through the Express Entry system, this change highlights the importance of focusing on your skills, experience, and qualifications, rather than relying on job offers to improve your score.
