A recent analysis highlights this trend, positioning Canada as a leading choice over traditional destinations like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This shift is attributed to a variety of factors, including the quality of education, affordability, and favorable post-graduation pathways.

A comprehensive survey conducted in Spring 2025 indicates a remarkable surge in interest among international students towards Canada, with 94% showing some level of interest—more than any other country. Interestingly, 65% of respondents exclusively considered Canada and a select few top countries, marking a notable increase from the previous year. This upward trend underscores Canada's growing appeal, despite the United States slightly edging out Canada in terms of students "extremely interested" in a study destination.
Selecting Canada: Key Influencing Factors
Several key factors influence the decision-making process for international students. Affordability tops the list, with 77% of surveyed students emphasizing the importance of affordable tuition fees. Other considerations include high graduate employment rates, programs that align with career goals, quality teaching, and the reputation of the program. Financial challenges have prompted over a quarter of students to reevaluate their choices, with many exploring European alternatives and shorter program options as cost-effective solutions.

Despite changes in Canadian government policies, such as the cap on study permit applications, interest in Canadian education remains robust. Although the number of approved study permits dropped from 517,410 in 2024 to 437,000 in 2025, 30% of students expressed an increased interest in Canada due to these changes. The prestige associated with a Canadian study permit has grown, influencing student interest beyond traditional academic considerations.
