Canada-U.S. Border Hours to Change in 2024
Frequent travelers between Canada and the U.S. should prepare for reduced travel hours starting next year.
Adjusted Border Crossing Times
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced that, effective from 12:01 a.m. local time on January 6, 35 ports of entry will see changes to their operational hours. This measure aims to enhance security for both countries.
Affected Regions and Ports
- Manitoba: 12 ports
- Quebec: 10 ports
- Saskatchewan: 6 ports
- New Brunswick: 4 ports
- British Columbia: 2 ports
- Alberta: 1 port

Variations in Time Adjustments
The changes in hours differ per location, with some ports reducing their hours by as little as one hour and others by as much as five. Commercial entry times will also see variations across the nation.
Collaboration with the United States
These modifications were developed in partnership with U.S. counterparts, based on an analysis of operations, peak times, and necessary services at each crossing. An alternative border crossing option will be available within 100 kilometers from any affected port.
The United States will similarly adjust its border crossing hours to synchronize efforts, facilitating the return of inadmissible travelers and goods.
Enhanced Resource Allocation
By altering operational hours, more resources can be allocated for enforcement activities and processing at busier ports.
Rising Border Encounters
There has been a notable increase in U.S. Border Patrol encounters along the Canada-U.S. border since the start of 2023.
Official Statements
Rebecca Purdy, a senior spokesperson for the CBSA, clarified in an email to CBC that these changes are unrelated to the recent U.S. elections. "Analysis and planning for this adjustment in service took place over several months and is not related to the U.S. election," Purdy stated.
This strategic move signifies a concerted effort between Canada and the U.S. to bolster border security while maintaining efficient traveler processing. As these changes take effect, travelers are advised to plan accordingly and stay informed through official channels.
