Several permanent residence pathways may be available to you depending on the type of work permit you hold and your work experience in Canada.
If you have a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) or an employer-specific work permit, the most common route is Express Entry, particularly the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) stream once you gain at least one year of skilled Canadian work experience. You would create an Express Entry profile and be ranked in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) pool based on factors like age, education, language scores, and work experience. Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are another major option—most provinces have streams for workers already employed in the province, and a provincial nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score, virtually guaranteeing an Express Entry invitation.
If your work permit is employer-specific and your employer wants to retain you permanently, they may support you through a PNP employer-driven stream or help you obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to boost your CRS score by 50 or 200 points depending on the job classification. Some occupations also qualify for non-Express Entry federal programs like the Agri-Food Pilot or specific PNP base streams that do not require Express Entry registration.
Your eligibility depends heavily on your National Occupational Classification (NOC) code, how long you can work under your current permit, your language ability in English or French, and whether your employer will support the application. Start by confirming your NOC classification and taking an approved language test if you have not already done so, as these are foundational to most pathways.
