Canada Launches Urgent Resettlement Program for At-Risk Afghan Allies

Ottawa, July 23, 2021 — In a bold move to recognize and protect the brave Afghans who significantly contributed to Canada's mission in Afghanistan, the Canadian government has unveiled a special resettlement initiative aimed at those now vulnerable under Taliban rule. Over the past decade, more than 800 individuals have successfully resettled in Canada, yet many remain in perilous conditions.

A Swift Response to a Deteriorating Situation

Amid escalating threats in Afghanistan, the urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. Canadian officials are moving quickly to assist those who risked their lives in support of Canada’s efforts. Today, the Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, announced the launch of a targeted program designed to offer sanctuary to these endangered individuals.

Special Immigration Measures

The new initiative, spearheaded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), introduces specific immigration measures to facilitate safe passage and protection in Canada. The program is being executed in collaboration with Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and the Department of National Defence (DND), which are actively working to identify eligible individuals for resettlement.

Eligible Participants

The program targets a broad range of individuals who provided essential services, including:

  • Interpreters who worked with the Canadian Armed Forces
  • Cooks, drivers, cleaners, and other support staff
  • Security guards and construction workers
  • Locally engaged staff at the Embassy of Canada to Afghanistan

To qualify, applicants must demonstrate a significant or enduring relationship with the Government of Canada and satisfy all standard admissibility requirements, encompassing security, criminal, and health screenings. The process will adhere to existing COVID-19 public health measures and safety protocols, with expedited timelines to address the urgency of their circumstances.

Commitment to Privacy and Security

In safeguarding the privacy and safety of those involved, the Canadian government will not disclose identities, evacuation methods, or timelines. This measure extends to protect the extended families of applicants who may still reside in Afghanistan. For security reasons, no details regarding specific operational undertakings will be shared publicly.

As Canada responds to this humanitarian imperative, the nation reaffirms its commitment to those who stood by its side during challenging times. This program not only highlights Canada's dedication to global responsibility but also reinforces the principles of safety, compassion, and gratitude at the heart of its immigration policies.
