Canada’s Commitment to Afghan Resettlement: Stories of Hope and New Beginnings

Ottawa, June 17, 2022—In a determined effort to provide sanctuary for those in need, the Government of Canada is steadfast in its mission to resettle at least 40,000 Afghan nationals. To date, over 16,000 Afghan refugees have been welcomed, including the 313 individuals who arrived on a charter flight in Vancouver this morning. These arrivals are part of Canada's broader commitment to supporting those who aided its mission in Afghanistan.

As World Refugee Day approaches on June 20, Canada is highlighting the compelling stories of Afghan newcomers who have found refuge and a fresh start on Canadian soil.

Celebrating Resilience on World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day, established by the United Nations in 2001, is a day to honor the resilience and courage of those who have been forced to flee their homelands due to conflict and persecution. It is a time to deepen our understanding of the challenges faced by refugees and to acknowledge their strength in rebuilding their lives under the most daunting circumstances.

Stories of Courage and New Beginnings

Abdul Hakim Azizi: From Interpreter to Innovator

Abdul Hakim Azizi, once an interpreter for the Canadian Armed Forces, made his journey to Canada last August. Now residing in Ottawa with his wife, who is currently learning English, Mr. Azizi has secured a position at a tech start-up. The couple has cultivated a supportive community, forging connections with other Afghan newcomers. Despite the hurdles of adapting to a new country, Mr. Azizi remains deeply grateful for the assistance received and takes pride in their achievements in such a short time.

“Canada is a warm, welcoming country, and I’m very proud that I stabilized my life so soon. It is because of the support that I received, but also my struggle and hard work. I have goals to continue my education and build a stronger professional career.”
– Abdul Hakim Azizi

Mohammad Tamim Hamkar: Building a Legacy

Mohammad Tamim Hamkar, formerly the deputy director of an NGO collaborating with the Canadian Embassy in Kabul, arrived in Ottawa with his wife and three children in October 2021. The unexpected collapse of Afghanistan's government prompted their departure. Now, the Hamkar children are thriving in their new school environment, while the family diligently works towards establishing their new life in Canada.

“I’m proud of my daughters because now they are going to school, and they are fully dedicated to their school. One day they will be able to contribute and work here. This is my legacy.”
– Mohammad Tamim Hamkar

A Nationwide Effort to Support Afghan Newcomers

In collaboration with partners across the country, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is making significant strides to transform the lives of Afghan newcomers. The agency offers crucial support to those most in need, facilitating their transition into Canadian society.

For those interested in contributing to these efforts, opportunities abound in the form of volunteering, donating, sponsoring, or other supportive actions. Canadians eager to make a difference can find more information on how to get involved.
