Canada and UK Forge Enhanced Youth Mobility Agreement

Wallace, Nova Scotia, July 14, 2023—In a move aimed at broadening the horizons for young individuals across Canada and the United Kingdom, both nations have reaffirmed their commitment to cultivating work opportunities that empower youth to reach their full potential.

Today marks a significant milestone as the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada, alongside the Right Honourable Robert Jenrick, UK Minister of State for Immigration, announced the signing of an enhanced Canada–United Kingdom Youth Mobility Arrangement. This new agreement was formalized through signatures by Minister Fraser and Her Excellency Susannah Goshko, British High Commissioner to Canada.

Key Features of the New Arrangement

This upgraded arrangement promises to provide more Canadian and British youth with reciprocal work opportunities, allowing them to immerse themselves in each other’s cultures for extended periods through the International Experience Canada (IEC) and the UK’s Youth Mobility Scheme. Notable enhancements include:

  • Expanded Eligibility Age: Youth aged 18 to 35 will now be eligible, up from the previous range of 18 to 30.
  • Introduction of New Streams: Two new categories—International Co-op (Internship) and Young Professionals—will be introduced to complement the existing Working Holiday option for UK nationals visiting Canada.
  • Extended Stay Duration: Participants will be able to stay up to three years, an increase from the prior limit of two years.

Cultivating Global Citizens

International youth mobility is more than just a work opportunity; it is a gateway for young people to delve into diverse cultures, languages, and societies. These experiences are invaluable, fostering the development of life skills and enhancing future job prospects.

Looking Ahead

Canada and the UK are enthusiastic about the positive impact this renewed arrangement will have and anticipate its implementation in 2024. Through such collaborative efforts, both countries are not only investing in their youth but are also strengthening bilateral ties that will benefit future generations.

This agreement underscores a shared vision of preparing young individuals to thrive in a globalized world, enriching their personal and professional lives while promoting mutual understanding and cooperation. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, such initiatives are vital in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
