Canada Accelerates Efforts to Resettle Afghan Refugees

January 19, 2022—Vancouver—In a decisive move to address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, Canada is bolstering its efforts to offer Afghan citizens and their families a safe haven. The nation remains resolute in its pledge to resettle 40,000 Afghan nationals, a target made feasible through robust collaborations with provinces, territories, and settlement service providers across the country.

A Milestone Arrival in Vancouver

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the arrival of over 200 Afghan refugees in Vancouver, marking the largest single flight of Afghan nationals to British Columbia to date. Of these arrivals, approximately 161 individuals will begin their new lives in Vancouver, while the remaining 48 will integrate into communities across Canada where they have existing family connections. This influx brings the total number of Afghan refugees who have found sanctuary in Canada to over 7,000.

The recent charter flight from Islamabad, Pakistan, carried primarily those who, through their work, maintained significant relationships with the Canadian government, accompanied by their families.

Comprehensive Support Framework

Throughout this ambitious humanitarian initiative, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has leaned heavily on the support of IRCC-funded Resettlement Assistance Program service provider organizations (RAP SPOs). These organizations have been instrumental in delivering vital services to newcomers and refugees.

Upon arrival at Vancouver International Airport, the new arrivals were welcomed by the Community Airport Newcomers Network, a RAP SPO initiative spearheaded by S.U.C.C.E.S.S., a non-profit organization. This program ensures newcomers receive essentials such as winter clothing, transportation arrangements, and initial orientation.

Transitioning to Life in Canada

In the ensuing weeks, the Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia (ISSofBC), another crucial RAP SPO, will provide ongoing support to these refugees. ISSofBC's comprehensive services include assistance in securing housing, finding employment, enhancing language skills, and adapting to life in Canada.

In a bid to enhance local support systems, the BC government announced the Refugee Readiness Fund in November 2021—a $2 million initiative aimed at strengthening community services for families resettling in the province due to the Afghan crisis. This fund is a testament to the province's readiness to embrace and support Afghan newcomers.

Since the first Afghan refugees arrived in Canada in August 2021, IRCC has been diligently working to connect them with communities rich in settlement resources. These efforts consider family connections, as well as the availability of schools, housing, and language training.

A Nation United in Support

The response from Canadians to the plight of Afghan refugees has been nothing short of extraordinary. Individuals and businesses eager to contribute through volunteering, donating, sponsoring, or other forms of support can explore numerous avenues to extend their help. This collective effort underscores the enduring spirit of generosity and compassion that defines Canada as a nation committed to humanitarian principles and global solidarity.

As Canada continues to welcome and integrate Afghan refugees, the journey ahead is one of hope, resilience, and new beginnings.
