Canada’s Commitment to Afghan Refugee Resettlement: A Year in Review

Ottawa, Ontario – June 24, 2022
The Government of Canada remains steadfast in its commitment to resettle at least 40,000 Afghan nationals, working tirelessly to ensure their transition is both rapid and secure. Since August 2021, Canada has welcomed 16,270 Afghan refugees, including over 3,800 school-aged children, into its communities.

Educational Integration: A New Beginning for Afghan Youth

As the school year draws to a close, Canada celebrates the successful integration of Afghan children into the educational system. These children, many of whom are girls who previously lacked access to education in Afghanistan, now thrive in safe and supportive school environments.

Across more than 90 Canadian communities, schools have opened their doors to these newcomers. The Saskatchewan Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) Program has been pivotal, implementing tailored programs that focus on academics, physical education, and skill development to aid in classroom integration. In Saskatoon, the SWIS Refugee Language Program provides specialized support to enhance English language proficiency and familiarize children with Canadian culture and geography.

Community Support and Cultural Awareness

In British Columbia, the Surrey Schools Welcome Centre has played a crucial role, integrating over 550 Afghan children into the Surrey School District. The center's settlement workers foster inclusive spaces by offering essentials such as school supplies, meal programs, and transportation. Moreover, cultural awareness sessions conducted by Dari- and Pashto-speaking workers equip educators with the knowledge to better support these students.

In St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Association for New Canadians SWIS Program extends its support to newcomer children across all grades. Students access online learning resources, tablets, and English as a Second Language tools while awaiting permanent housing. Through mentorship programs and after-school clubs, children are afforded opportunities to enhance their English and social skills in a nurturing setting.

Building a Foundation for Success

These programs underscore Canada’s dedication to fostering an environment where Afghan children can not only learn but also flourish. By providing comprehensive educational support and cultural integration initiatives, Canada ensures these young newcomers have the tools necessary to succeed in their new communities. The collective efforts of schools, settlement programs, and community workers highlight a national commitment to inclusivity and opportunity.
