This diplomatic mission focused on addressing the pressing humanitarian crises in Afghanistan and Ukraine, reaffirming Canada’s unwavering commitment to aid those most in need.

Key Meetings in Brussels

Minister Fraser's European journey commenced in Brussels, where he engaged with pivotal figures from the European Union, including representatives from the European Commission and Council, as well as ProtectDefenders.eu. Discussions were also held with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Front Line Defenders, the International Organization for Migration, and the Migration Policy Institute Europe. These conversations centered on Canada's response to the Afghan crisis and the repercussions of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The meetings underscored the importance of ongoing collaboration on international migration and refugee protection.

Strengthening Ties with EU Leaders

In a significant dialogue with Ylva Johansson, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Minister Fraser addressed the pressing need for enhanced support for the growing number of displaced individuals worldwide. Accompanied by Belgian State Secretary for Asylum and Migration, Sammy Mahdi, he visited a Belgian refugee registration center, which plays a crucial role in supporting Ukrainian refugees.

Promoting Francophone Immigration in Paris

Minister Fraser’s visit to Paris included a keynote speech at an event promoting Francophone immigration to Canada. He engaged with potential immigrants from Europe, the Maghreb, and other Francophone regions, emphasizing Canada's welcoming stance. A tour of a visa application center provided valuable insights into the client experience regarding immigration services.

Highlighting Canadian Solidarity in Warsaw

The visit culminated in Warsaw, where Minister Fraser delivered a keynote address at an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) event focused on the Ukrainian crisis. He underscored Canada’s solidarity with Ukraine and commitment to offering temporary safe haven to Ukrainians.

Expansion of Services for Ukrainians

In a significant announcement, the Minister launched the Canada Information Centre in Warsaw, along with a second temporary biometric center in Berlin, capable of handling up to 1,000 biometric appointments daily. These initiatives are aimed at facilitating the process for Ukrainians seeking refuge in Canada.

Collaboration with Polish Officials

While in Poland, Minister Fraser met with Paweł Szefernaker, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, and officials from Lublin municipality. Discussions focused on joint efforts to support those fleeing Ukraine. In Lublin, the Minister visited a humanitarian operations base distributing essential relief items, including Canadian contributions, to Ukrainians affected by the conflict.
