Canada Strengthens Global Migration Initiatives
May 19, 2022—New York—Migrants have long been integral to Canada's national identity, playing a crucial role in the nation's development. Their contributions have not only fueled economic growth by addressing labor shortages but have also bolstered population figures and enriched the country's diverse cultural tapestry.
In an effort to build on the 2018 adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, has spearheaded Canada’s delegation to the International Migration Review Forum in New York. At this pivotal gathering, Minister Fraser unveiled four strategic pledges designed to invigorate and materially advance the GCM's objectives.
Canada's Four Pledges to Enhance Global Migration
1. Gender-Responsive Migration Programs
Minister Fraser highlighted Canada's commitment to promoting gender-responsive migration initiatives. This includes the Gender + Migration Hub, funded by Canada, which supports countries in implementing gender-sensitive immigration and integration strategies.
2. Supporting Positive Narratives on Migration
The minister announced increased financial backing for the "It Takes a Community" social media campaign, orchestrated by the International Organization for Migration. This campaign seeks to dispel xenophobia, combat racism, and foster inclusive communities by promoting balanced and positive narratives about migrants.
3. Capacity-Building in the Americas
Canada's third pledge focuses on bolstering socio-economic integration, labor mobility, and fair recruitment practices for migrants and refugees in the Americas. This initiative targets Central America and Venezuela, aiming to enhance host countries' capacities to accommodate newcomers.
4. Assisting Women and Girls in Central America
To mitigate the factors leading to high-risk migration and forced displacement, Canada will support programs assisting women and girls in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. This initiative is part of a $10 million project announced last year, aiming to improve living conditions and protection for over 5,000 women and girls.
Canada as a Global Champion
As a champion country, Canada is steadfast in aligning its national policies with the GCM's objectives. The nation remains dedicated to collaborating with international partners to advocate for regular migration pathways globally. By doing so, Canada continues to set a standard for humane and orderly migration practices, ensuring that migration benefits societies both domestically and globally.
Canada's unwavering commitment to these initiatives underscores its role as a leader in the global migration arena, setting a precedent for a future where migration is managed safely, orderly, and with dignity for all.
