Canada Extends Emergency Travel Program for Ukrainian Refugees

Ottawa, March 22, 2023—In the wake of Russia's ongoing, unlawful invasion of Ukraine, Canada reaffirms its unwavering support for displaced Ukrainians seeking refuge. As part of this commitment, Canada is offering a temporary safe haven and necessary support systems for those forced to flee their homes.

Today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the extension of the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET). This decision will allow Ukrainians and their families to continue seeking refuge in Canada through the following measures:

  • Visa Application Deadline: Ukrainians and their family members now have until July 15, 2023, to apply for a CUAET visa without any fees.
  • Travel Period: Those holding a CUAET visa can travel to Canada under these special measures until March 31, 2024.
  • Status Extension: CUAET holders already in Canada can extend or adjust their temporary status, free of charge, until March 31, 2024.

Upon arrival, Ukrainians and their family members will have access to comprehensive settlement services to ensure their full participation in Canadian communities. They will also receive one-time transitional financial assistance and, if necessary, emergency accommodations for up to two weeks.

The Government of Canada, in collaboration with provincial, territorial, and municipal partners, along with settlement service providers and the Ukrainian-Canadian community, remains committed to welcoming Ukrainians escaping Russia’s unlawful aggression.

These initiatives are part of Canada's broader strategy to bolster Ukraine’s security and resilience while holding Russia accountable for its actions. As the situation evolves, Canada stands ready to adjust its support to meet the ongoing needs of Ukrainians.

In this crucial moment, Canada continues to demonstrate its leadership and compassion on the global stage, reaffirming its dedication to humanitarian principles and international solidarity.
