Canada Invests $35 Million to Support Newcomers in Rural Communities

January 17, 2022—Ottawa—The Canadian government has announced a significant investment aimed at enhancing the settlement experience for newcomers, particularly in small towns and rural areas. The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, revealed a commitment of over $35 million to bolster resettlement capacity and settlement services nationwide. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate newcomers as vital contributors to Canada's societal and economic landscape, especially in the wake of the pandemic.

Essential Support Amidst a Global Challenge

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the inherent challenges faced by newcomers as they adapt to life in Canada. Recognizing this, the government has selected 23 projects under the Resettlement Assistance Program and Case Management Services to provide comprehensive support to refugees and vulnerable individuals. These projects are designed to facilitate the transition of newcomers, ensuring they have the tools necessary to thrive in their new environment.

Targeted Investment in Resettlement Services

The funding includes an allocation of $21 million to introduce nine new Resettlement Assistance Program service providers across British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and New Brunswick. This expansion aims to alleviate the demand on the existing 32 service providers and offers refugees the chance to settle in communities where affordable housing is more accessible. By assisting newcomers with language acquisition, employment opportunities, and community engagement, these services are pivotal in helping them reach their full potential as Canada progresses towards economic recovery.

Enhancing Case Management for Vulnerable Newcomers

An additional $14 million is earmarked for enhancing case management services across 14 current service providers. This includes a pilot project focused on improving Francophone case management in the Prairies, thereby catering to a diverse demographic of newcomers. These services are essential for offering personalized support and referrals, which are crucial for the successful integration of newcomers into their communities.

A Global Leader in Settlement and Integration

Canada's reputation as a global leader in settlement and integration is largely attributed to the relentless efforts of service provider organizations across the country. Their dedication to delivering essential support services has been particularly vital during the pandemic and as Canada welcomes an increasing number of newcomers. These efforts are instrumental in addressing the multifaceted challenges that newcomers encounter, such as securing housing, starting new careers, and learning a new language.

With these strategic investments, Canada is poised to not only support but also empower newcomers, including Afghan refugees, as they embark on their journey to build new lives. These measures underscore Canada's commitment to fostering inclusive communities where all individuals can contribute meaningfully, thereby enriching the nation's cultural and economic tapestry. As newcomers find their footing in Canada, they are not merely adapting to a new home; they are actively shaping the future of the country.
