Canada Expands Support for Iranian Nationals Amid Human Rights Concerns

February 23, 2023 — Vancouver: In response to the escalating human rights violations in Iran, the Canadian government has unveiled a suite of measures aimed at supporting Iranian nationals currently residing in Canada. This initiative underscores Canada's ongoing commitment to safeguarding individuals in precarious situations and facilitating family unity.

New Immigration Measures Announced

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources, representing the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced these critical measures in Vancouver. Effective March 1, 2023, the new policies are designed to ease the path for Iranians seeking to extend their stay in Canada.

Key Components of the Initiative:

  • Extended Temporary Status: Iranians in Canada will find it easier to extend their temporary status and transition between different temporary streams. This flexibility allows them to continue studying, working, or visiting family without leaving Canada.

  • Open Work Permit Pathway: A dedicated open work permit pathway will be available to facilitate employment opportunities for Iranian nationals already in the country.

  • Priority Processing: Applications from Iranians will receive expedited processing to ensure timely support.

  • Fee Waivers: The Canadian government will waive certain processing fees for those extending their stay. Additionally, passport and permanent resident travel document fees will be waived for Canadians and permanent residents in Iran wishing to leave.

Commitment to Human Rights

Canada is also exploring enhancements to its existing programs, such as the Human Rights Defenders stream. This unique initiative is among the few globally that offers a dedicated, permanent immigration route for individuals who advocate for human rights.

These actions are a continuation of Canada's firm stance against the Iranian regime's oppressive measures against its citizens, aiming to provide a safe haven for those affected by the ongoing unrest.

A Pledge to Monitor and Adapt

The Canadian government remains vigilant in its monitoring of the situation in Iran. It is prepared to adapt its response to meet the evolving needs of Iranians. This proactive approach ensures that Canada remains a bastion of support and safety for those fleeing persecution and seeking a better future.

Canada's commitment to upholding human rights and providing refuge to those in need reflects its core values and dedication to international humanitarian efforts. As global dynamics shift, Canada stands ready to respond with compassion and resolve.
