Canada Introduces Special Immigration Measures Amidst Wildfire Crisis

In a significant move today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, unveiled a series of special measures aimed at those impacted by the wildfires. These measures are designed to facilitate the replacement of vital documents and the extension or restoration of residency status in Canada.

Free Replacement Documents
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will provide complimentary replacement documents for those directly affected by the wildfires. This includes:
- Permanent resident cards
- Canadian citizenship certificates
- Canadian passports
- Other travel documents
These documents will be reissued at no cost for Canadians, permanent residents, and temporary residents who have lost, damaged, or are unable to access them due to the wildfires.
Status Extensions for Affected Individuals
The measures also cater to international students, temporary foreign workers, and other visitors whose status is set to expire by September 30, 2023. They will be eligible to apply for status restoration or extension without incurring any charges. This provision ensures:
- Temporary workers can remain in Canada, even if their place of employment is temporarily closed.
- International students have the opportunity to extend their study permits if their academic schedules are disrupted, ensuring they can complete their education without facing penalties.
