Canada Strengthens Humanitarian Efforts with UAE Partnership to Aid Afghan Resettlement

Toronto, May 26, 2023 — In the face of complex geopolitical challenges, effective humanitarian partnerships are essential for ensuring the safe relocation of Afghans to Canada. The Canadian government remains committed to collaborating with like-minded nations, regional partners, and non-governmental organizations to facilitate this critical process.

In a significant development, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced an enhanced agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This agreement aims to expand safe passage options for Afghans seeking refuge in Canada. Under this partnership, Canada will resettle up to 1,000 Afghan nationals previously evacuated from Kabul and currently residing in the UAE.

Successful Arrivals and Future Goals

As part of this cooperation, a charter flight landed in Toronto today, bringing over 650 Afghan nationals to Canada. These new arrivals are set to integrate into more than 15 communities across the country, including Kingston, St. Catharines, Toronto, and Vancouver.

The collaboration with the UAE is not new; in 2022, Canada welcomed three flights of Afghan nationals, increasing the total number of arrivals from the UAE to over 1,500. This ongoing partnership is a testament to the shared commitment to humanitarian assistance.

Despite the formidable challenges that lie ahead, Canada is on course to meet its ambitious goal of resettling at least 40,000 vulnerable Afghans by the end of 2023. To date, nearly 32,000 individuals have found a new home in Canada, marking significant progress in this humanitarian effort.

Acknowledging Efforts and Looking Forward

The Canadian government extends its gratitude to the UAE for their substantial efforts and partnership in facilitating the safe passage of displaced Afghan nationals. This cooperation not only aids resettlement in Canada but also supports similar efforts in other countries worldwide.

As Canada continues to navigate the complexities of global migration and resettlement, such international partnerships remain instrumental. With a steadfast commitment to humanitarian values, Canada aims to provide a safe haven for those in need, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in global resettlement initiatives.

In conclusion, the strengthened partnership with the UAE underscores Canada's dedication to humanitarian causes and its willingness to collaborate on the international stage. As the country moves forward, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and integration of Afghan nationals into Canadian society, fostering a future of hope and opportunity.
