Canada Enhances Support for Ukrainian Refugees with Federal Charter Flights

Ottawa, Ontario—In a steadfast show of solidarity with the people of Ukraine, Canada is extending a temporary refuge to Ukrainians in need. Recognizing the urgency and necessity for some individuals and families to seek safety, the Canadian government has been actively developing pathways to facilitate their journey to Canada.

On May 11, 2022, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced a significant initiative: three federal charter flights will soon be available to transport Ukrainians and their family members to Canada. These flights are part of the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) program, offering a streamlined process for those seeking sanctuary.

Flight Schedule

The following flights will operate on a first-come, first-served basis for CUAET-approved visa holders departing from Poland:

  • May 23: Arrival in Winnipeg, Manitoba
  • May 29: Arrival in Montréal, Quebec
  • June 2: Arrival in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Eligible Ukrainians will be contacted via email in the upcoming days with detailed instructions on how to register for these flights.

Support Upon Arrival

Upon arrival in Canada, the government will ensure temporary accommodations are provided for up to 14 nights for those who have not yet secured suitable housing arrangements. This initiative is part of a broader support system designed to ease the transition for Ukrainian newcomers.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Plans

These charter flights complement the existing resources made available to Ukrainians, such as the Ukraine2Canada Travel Fund. This fund, in partnership with Miles4Migrants, Air Canada, and the Shapiro Foundation, aims to assist at least 10,000 Ukrainians and their families in reaching Canadian soil.

The Canadian government's commitment goes beyond immediate travel assistance. It is actively collaborating with provincial and territorial governments, as well as settlement organizations nationwide, to implement these special measures effectively. This comprehensive support network is crucial in ensuring that Ukrainians receive the necessary assistance as they integrate into Canadian society.

As Canada continues to open its doors, it reaffirms its dedication to providing a safe haven for those affected by conflict, fostering a welcoming environment that embodies the nation's humanitarian values. Moving forward, Canada will maintain its efforts to support Ukrainians, offering a beacon of hope and stability amidst uncertain times.
