Canada Waives Document Fees for Hurricane Fiona Victims

January 20, 2023—Ottawa — In a significant move to support those impacted by Hurricane Fiona, the Canadian government has announced a series of measures aimed at alleviating the burdens faced by affected individuals. In addition to the assistance provided through the Hurricane Fiona Recovery Fund, the federal government is taking direct action to help residents replace crucial documents lost or destroyed in the disaster.

Waived Fees for Essential Document Replacement

On behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, unveiled a new policy. This initiative allows for the waiving of fees for the replacement of vital documents, including:

  • Permanent resident cards
  • Canadian citizenship certificates or cards
  • Canadian passports
  • Other essential travel documents

These provisions are specifically targeted at Canadians who have been directly affected by the hurricane. The replacement documents will maintain the same expiration dates as the originals, ensuring a seamless transition without additional bureaucratic hurdles.

Implementation and Time Frame

The measures are set to apply retroactively, starting from September 24, 2022, and will remain in effect until further notice. This generous time frame provides ample opportunity for Canadians and permanent residents to assess their needs and submit applications for replacement documents without the burden of additional costs.

A Continued Commitment to Support

This initiative underscores the Canadian government's commitment to providing comprehensive support to its citizens in times of crisis. By addressing both immediate and long-term needs, the government aims to facilitate a smoother recovery process for those affected by Hurricane Fiona.

The decision to waive fees is a testament to the government's recognition of the challenges faced by individuals in rebuilding their lives after such a devastating event. It reflects a broader strategy to ensure that all citizens have the necessary tools to navigate the aftermath of natural disasters, reinforcing the nation's resilience and unity.

As Canada continues to extend its support, this measure stands as a pivotal step in helping those affected regain a sense of normalcy and stability. With ongoing efforts to assist in recovery, the government remains dedicated to standing by its people, ensuring that no one faces the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona alone.
