Canadian Government Unveils New Grocery Rebate in Budget 2023

April 3, 2023—Calgary: The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Citizenship, and Refugees, announced significant measures from Budget 2023 aimed at alleviating financial burdens for Canadians. During his visit to Calgary, Alberta, Minister Fraser emphasized the introduction of a new Grocery Rebate designed to assist those who need it most.

Targeted Relief for Canadians

Budget 2023 introduces the Grocery Rebate, a measure crafted to provide inflation relief to approximately 11 million low- and modest-income Canadians and families. This initiative focuses on:

  • Eligible couples with children: Receiving up to an additional $467.
  • Single Canadians without children: Benefiting from an additional $234.
  • Seniors: Gaining an average of an additional $225.

The rebate is part of a broader strategy to make life more affordable for Canadians, particularly in the face of rising living costs.

Additional Financial Measures

In addition to the Grocery Rebate, the Government of Canada is implementing several measures to ensure financial stability and fairness, including:

  • Cracking down on junk fees and predatory lending: Aimed at protecting consumers from unfair financial practices.
  • Reducing credit card transaction fees for small businesses: Helping entrepreneurs retain more of their earnings.
  • Increasing financial retention for Canadians: Ensuring that individuals and families can keep more of their hard-earned money.

A Responsible Fiscal Plan

Budget 2023 is underpinned by a responsible fiscal strategy, ensuring Canada maintains the lowest deficit and the lowest net debt-to-GDP ratio among G7 nations. This approach not only addresses immediate financial needs but also lays the groundwork for a more secure, sustainable, and affordable future.

Minister Fraser's announcement in Calgary underscores the government's commitment to building a resilient economy that supports all Canadians from coast to coast to coast. By prioritizing affordability and sustainability, Budget 2023 aims to create a brighter future for Canada, ensuring that economic growth and prosperity are shared by all.
