This revelation brings into question why there was a delay in implementing measures to address the issue.
A confidential report was delivered to top-ranking officials of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. It details how traffickers were ferrying individuals to and fro the border, including foreign nationals who arrived in Canada via major airports only to quickly vanish across the border into the United States.
According to the intelligence assessment by the Canada Border Services Agency, these covert activities have resulted in thousands of asylum applications, primarily in the Greater Toronto Area.
Despite being aware of the escalating situation for over a year, it was only recently that Ottawa initiated any action.
