Canada Expands Visa Services with New Centre in Lisbon

Ottawa, February 19, 2024—In a strategic move to bolster its immigration framework, Canada has announced the inauguration of a new Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Lisbon, Portugal. This development, scheduled for February 26, 2024, underscores Canada's commitment to enhancing its immigration services, which are pivotal to the nation’s economic vitality and cultural diversity.

Enhancing Global Reach

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, emphasized the importance of expanding Canada's international presence to accommodate the increasing number of visa applications. The new centre in Lisbon marks a significant milestone in this endeavor. With this addition, the network of VACs managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will now encompass 163 locations across 110 countries.

The Role of Visa Application Centres

VACs play a crucial role in the visa application process. Operated by private companies under contracts with the Canadian government, these centres are responsible for:

  • Accepting and securely transmitting required documentation to IRCC offices.
  • Providing biometric collection services.
  • Offering support through service agents available via phone, email, or in person, with assistance in local languages.

This infrastructure ensures that applicants receive comprehensive support, facilitating a smoother and more efficient application journey.

Strengthening Canada-Portugal Relations

The establishment of the Lisbon VAC reflects the deepening people-to-people ties between Canada and Portugal. A significant Canadian community of Portuguese origin illustrates the robust cultural connections between the two nations. The new centre is set to enhance these ties by simplifying the process for Portuguese citizens to visit, study, or work in Canada.

A Gateway to Opportunities

The Lisbon VAC is more than just a procedural convenience; it is a gateway to increased social, economic, and cultural exchanges. By making Canada more accessible to Portuguese citizens, the centre fosters mutual benefits that extend beyond individual applicants to enrich both societies.

In conclusion, as Canada continues to evolve its immigration policies and infrastructure, the opening of the Lisbon VAC symbolizes a forward-thinking approach to facilitating global mobility. This initiative not only supports Canada’s economic objectives but also strengthens its multicultural fabric, paving the way for a more interconnected and vibrant future.
