Canada Extends Support to Ukrainian Nationals Seeking Refuge

June 2, 2022—Ottawa
In solidarity with the people of Ukraine, Canada continues to offer a safe haven for those affected by the ongoing conflict. This commitment extends beyond mere refuge, encompassing comprehensive support systems designed to ensure the successful integration of Ukrainians into Canadian society.

Financial Assistance for Ukrainian Arrivals

Today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, alongside the Honourable Karina Gould, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, unveiled a new financial assistance program. This initiative is aimed at aiding Ukrainian nationals and their families in meeting essential needs such as transportation and securing longer-term housing upon their arrival in Canada.

Key Details of the Financial Support:

  • Eligibility: Ukrainian nationals and their family members with valid work, study, or temporary resident permits, or visitor records under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET).
  • Financial Aid: A one-time payment of $3,000 per adult and $1,500 per child (17 years and under).
  • Application Process: Applications must be submitted through the Government of Canada's online portal, which is now live.
  • Payment Method: Direct deposit into a Canadian bank account within five business days of application approval.

To facilitate this process, applicants must ensure their bank account name matches the name on their temporary resident status document. Additionally, acquiring a Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) is essential for employment.

Broader Support Initiatives

This financial aid is a testament to Canada's broader efforts to assist Ukrainians fleeing the devastation of Russia's illegal invasion. Beyond monetary support, the Canadian government is facilitating three charter flights from Poland, with the final flight scheduled to touch down in Halifax later today.

Settlement Services Offered:

  • Language Training: Essential for effective communication and integration.
  • Life Orientation: Guidance on enrolling children in school, opening bank accounts, and other essential services.
  • Employment Assistance: Resources and services aimed at helping new arrivals secure jobs.

Conclusion

Canada's initiative underscores its unwavering commitment to standing with Ukraine during these challenging times. By providing financial assistance and comprehensive settlement services, the government aims to ensure that Ukrainian nationals not only find refuge but also thrive within Canadian communities. As Canada continues to support these individuals before and after their arrival, a message of hope and solidarity resonates throughout the nation. The path to a new beginning in Canada is paved with both opportunity and the embrace of a welcoming society.
