Canada’s Commitment to Afghan Refugee Resettlement
Ottawa, February 11, 2022 — The Government of Canada is steadfast in its mission to resettle 40,000 Afghan nationals with urgency and care. In a significant stride toward this goal, nearly 460 Afghan refugees arrived in Canada over the past week via 20 commercial flights. This brings the total number of Afghan nationals resettled in Canada to 7,550.
A Warm Welcome in Vancouver
On February 3, a notable moment unfolded at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) when a flight carrying 90 government-assisted refugees touched down. The newcomers were warmly greeted by Musqueam elders, who performed a traditional cedar brushing and welcome song. This ceremony, rich in cultural significance, was conducted to ensure a fresh start and safe journey for the refugees.
The Role of the Musqueam Community
The welcoming ceremony was part of the Vancouver Airport Authority’s Friendship Agreement with the Musqueam community, a meaningful step towards reconciliation. Through this gesture, the Musqueam and YVR aim to provide newcomers with an introduction to Musqueam history and culture, hoping to inspire a deeper understanding and respect for Indigenous peoples in Canada.
