Canada Enhances Super Visa Program to Foster Family Reunification

June 7, 2022—Ottawa

As Canada emerges from the shadow of the pandemic, the federal government remains steadfast in its commitment to family reunification, a cornerstone of its immigration policy. This focus is not only aimed at attracting and retaining immigrants but also at integrating them into the fabric of Canadian society, thereby enhancing the nation's prosperity.

Today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, unveiled significant enhancements to Canada's super visa program. These improvements are designed to facilitate the reunion of Canadian citizens and permanent residents with their parents and grandparents, allowing for extended visits and a deeper familial connection.

Key Changes to the Super Visa Program

The changes, effective from July 4, 2022, encompass the following:

  • Extended Stay Duration: Super visa holders will now be permitted a stay of up to five years per entry into Canada, a substantial increase from the previous two-year allowance.

  • Stay Extension Option: Super visa holders will have the ability to apply for a stay extension of up to two years while in Canada, offering greater flexibility and peace of mind.

  • International Insurance Providers: For the first time, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship will have the authority to designate international medical insurance companies to provide the necessary coverage for super visa applicants. Currently, this coverage is exclusively available through Canadian providers. Details regarding approved international insurers will be announced on the IRCC website in due course.

A Decade of Family Reunification

Since its inception in 2011, the super visa program has been a vital tool for family reunification, allowing Canadian citizens and permanent residents to host their parents and grandparents for extended periods. The visa, valid for up to ten years, offers a more generous stay duration compared to the typical six months granted by a standard multiple-entry visitor visa.

The recent enhancements reflect the government’s unwavering dedication to family unification, reinforcing the super visa's role as a pivotal component in the nation's immigration strategy. By increasing the visa's accessibility and flexibility, Canada reaffirms its commitment to keeping families together, a value deeply embedded in its societal ethos.

The announcement by Minister Fraser marks a significant step forward, not just for families seeking to reunite, but for Canada as a whole, as it continues to build an inclusive and robust community. As these changes take effect, the country looks forward to welcoming more families, strengthening ties that transcend borders and enrich the Canadian landscape.
