Canada and Iceland Forge New Pathways for Youth Mobility

Winnipeg, Manitoba — August 4, 2023 — The Government of Canada continues to prioritize international experience as a cornerstone for Canadian youth, recognizing its increasing importance in the interconnected global economy. In a significant development, Canadian youth will soon find it easier to work and travel abroad, thanks to a new bilateral agreement with Iceland.

New Youth Mobility Arrangement Announced

In a joint announcement, Marie-France Lalonde, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, alongside Áslaug Arna Sigurbjörnsdóttir, Iceland's Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, unveiled a Youth Mobility Arrangement between Canada and Iceland. This agreement allows young individuals aged 18 to 30 from both nations to work and travel in each other's countries for up to 12 months. Furthermore, participants have the opportunity to extend their stay for an additional 12 months.

The governments of both countries are aiming to implement this arrangement in 2024, contingent upon fulfilling all necessary requirements.
