Canada Accelerates Efforts to Resettle Afghan Nationals

February 18, 2022—Ottawa – In a robust demonstration of international humanitarian commitment, the Government of Canada is expediting the resettlement of at least 40,000 Afghan nationals, prioritizing both speed and safety. Over the past week alone, Canada welcomed 335 Afghan refugees through government-assisted and privately sponsored initiatives. These new arrivals touched down on 10 commercial flights, with final destinations spanning across the nation, including Calgary, Winnipeg, and Sherbrooke. Cumulatively, Canada has now embraced a total of 7,885 Afghan nationals since the onset of this initiative.

Diverse Pathways to Safety

The recent arrivals encompass individuals approved via several channels:

  • Special Immigration Program: Designed for Afghans who provided assistance to the Canadian government.
  • Privately Sponsored Refugees: Supported by individual Canadians and community groups.
  • International Referrals: Refugees referred by entities such as the United States, Front Line Defenders, and the United Nations Refugee Agency.

A Nation's Welcoming Embrace

Canadians have shown remarkable generosity and hospitality, actively participating in the resettlement process. Since August 2021, citizens have donated over $1 million, contributed more than 200,000 goods—ranging from children's toys to personal care products—and offered upwards of 5,000 temporary accommodations.

The Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) stands at the forefront of these efforts, coordinating volunteers and donations across 34 Resettlement Assistance Program service providers across Canada.

Community Contributions

Examples of community generosity include:

  • The Afghan Network for Social Services: This Toronto-based non-profit donated 62 children's gift baskets and 200 articles of clothing to Polycultural Immigrant and Community Services.
  • Newfoundland and Labrador's Response: Local residents responded with an outpouring of clothing, household items, and gift cards to the Association for New Canadians. With corporate donations, these efforts have amassed over $100,000 in value.

A Collective Commitment

The resettlement of Afghan refugees underscores a collective national effort. Canadians eager to contribute through volunteering, donating, or sponsoring have a multitude of avenues to assist. Information on how to engage further in these efforts is readily available.

For media and the public, photos documenting previous arrivals can be accessed via Dropbox, providing a visual narrative of Canada's ongoing commitment. Tracking Canada's progress in welcoming Afghan refugees is also possible through official updates, reinforcing transparency and community involvement.

Canada's initiative to resettle Afghan nationals not only highlights its humanitarian values but also exemplifies the power of collective action in times of global need. As Canada continues to fulfill this commitment, the nation stands as a beacon of hope and refuge for those seeking safety and a new beginning.
