Canada Welcomes Highest Number of Francophone Newcomers Since 2006

January 23, 2023—Sturgeon Falls, Ontario—Immigration remains a cornerstone of Canadian values, embodying the cultural mosaic that defines the nation’s identity. Within this diverse tapestry, Francophone immigration holds particular significance, enriching the linguistic, demographic, and economic landscape of Francophone communities across the country.

In a significant announcement made at École secondaire catholique Franco-Cité in Sturgeon Falls, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, alongside Marie-France Lalonde, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister, and Marc G. Serré, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Official Languages, heralded a milestone achievement for 2022. Canada successfully met its target of welcoming 4.4% of French-speaking immigrants outside Quebec.

Milestone Achievements

  • Over 16,300 French-speaking immigrants settled in Francophone minority communities across Canada in 2022.
  • This figure marks a substantial increase from just over 2,800 admissions in 2006, representing a leap from 1.38% to 4.4%.
  • This influx is the largest recorded since the data collection began, underscoring the growing appeal and necessity of Francophone inclusion.

These newcomers are not merely residents; they are vital contributors to the development and vitality of communities outside Quebec. Their presence diversifies Canada’s cultural and linguistic landscape and injects new energy into local economies.

Strengthening Community and Economy

Achieving this target showcases Canada's commitment to enhancing the vitality of Francophone minority communities. The influx of French-speaking immigrants bolsters the promotion of the French language across the nation and plays a crucial role in addressing labor shortages.

This progress would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of provincial and territorial governments, alongside Francophone stakeholders. Such partnerships ensure that Canada remains a beacon for French-speaking immigrants seeking new opportunities.

Looking Ahead

Canada's dedication to Francophone immigration extends beyond this landmark achievement. The government is steadfast in its efforts to develop a comprehensive Francophone immigration policy that will further bolster population growth and economic prosperity. This policy will guide future initiatives, ensuring the continued success and integration of Francophone newcomers.

As Canada strides forward, the commitment to ambitious Francophone immigration objectives remains unwavering. With a clear roadmap and enduring partnerships, the nation is poised to further enrich its cultural fabric and economic landscape, reinforcing its status as a global leader in multicultural integration.
