Canada Launches Travel Fund to Support Ukrainians Amid Ongoing Conflict

Halifax, April 20, 2022 — The Government of Canada remains steadfast in its commitment to providing a sanctuary for Ukrainians and their families as they endure the enduring and unlawful conflict in their homeland. Recognizing the potential need for travel assistance, the government is urging Canadians and businesses alike to uphold their rich tradition of extending aid to the world's most vulnerable.

New Ukraine2Canada Travel Fund Announced

Today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, unveiled the Ukraine2Canada Travel Fund. This initiative, in collaboration with Miles4Migrants, The Shapiro Foundation, and Air Canada, aims to enhance the support available to Ukrainians seeking refuge in Canada.

How Canadians Can Contribute

Canadians and Canadian corporations have various avenues to contribute to this cause:

  • Aeroplan Points Donations: Donations can be made directly via Air Canada or Miles4Migrants websites.
  • Cash Contributions: The Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto will collect cash donations on behalf of the travel fund, ensuring these resources aid in sponsoring displaced Ukrainians.

This initiative seeks to facilitate flights for at least 10,000 Ukrainians and their families. Air Canada has already pledged a generous donation of 100 million Aeroplan points, while The Shapiro Foundation has promised to match Canadian contributions with an equivalent of up to 50 million Aeroplan points.

Eligibility and Implementation

The program is designed for Ukrainian nationals and their immediate family members holding valid Canadian travel documents and approved for Canadian entry. Comprehensive details on accessing the program will be released in the forthcoming weeks to ensure a smooth process for eligible individuals.

Complementary Government Measures

This travel fund is part of a broader suite of measures recently announced by the Canadian Prime Minister, aimed at bolstering support for Ukrainians. These measures include:

  • Targeted Charter Flights: Special flights to facilitate the safe passage of Ukrainian nationals to Canada.
  • Short-term Income Support: Financial assistance to help meet immediate needs upon arrival.
  • Temporary Accommodation: Up to two weeks of hotel lodging for those requiring additional support.

Canada's response to the crisis in Ukraine exemplifies a commitment not only to humanitarian principles but also to a collective, national effort in providing refuge and relief to those affected by conflict.

As these initiatives unfold, Canadians are encouraged to participate actively in this humanitarian endeavor, ensuring that the country continues to be a beacon of hope and sanctuary for those in need.
