Canada Unveils Previously Withheld Details of the Rodal Report

Ottawa, February 1, 2024 — The Government of Canada has reaffirmed its commitment to remembering the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust and the brave Canadians who fought to liberate Europe from Nazi tyranny. This tragic chapter in history must never fade from memory.

In a significant move toward transparency, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the release of a previously undisclosed version of the Rodal Report. This document, originally prepared to support the Commission of Inquiry on War Criminals in Canada—better known as the Deschênes Commission—was established in 1985. The updated release comes in response to a request under the Access to Information Act and unveils information that had been withheld from the public eye.

Insights into Historical Policies

The report, formally titled Nazi War Criminals in Canada: the Historical and Policy Setting from the 1940s to the Present by Alti Rodal, offers a comprehensive examination of the historical policies and circumstances that allowed Nazi war criminals to find refuge in Canada. The newly available version can be accessed on the Library and Archives Canada (LAC) website. While the passage of time has rendered some previously sensitive information suitable for release, portions of the report remain protected under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

A Commitment to Transparency

This release underscores the Canadian government's ongoing dedication to transparency. It is part of a broader initiative to review and disclose additional historical records related to war crimes investigations. The government continues to engage with affected communities, ensuring that Canadians can feel secure and informed.

Upholding International Justice

Canada remains firmly committed to the principles of international justice, actively opposing impunity for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. As the nation reflects on its past, it stands resolute in its pursuit of justice and truth, fostering a future where such atrocities are never repeated.

In this era of reflection and accountability, the release of the Rodal Report is a step forward in acknowledging and addressing the complexities of history, reinforcing Canada's pledge to a more transparent and just society.
