Canada Welcomes Afghan Refugees: A New Chapter Begins
Halifax, Nova Scotia (December 8, 2021) — As a key player in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and a staunch advocate for global peace and security, Canada is spearheading efforts to resettle Afghan personnel who were evacuated during recent conflicts. In a decisive move, the Canadian government is facilitating the resettlement of up to 472 Afghan staff identified by NATO, along with their families.
The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, extended a heartfelt virtual welcome today to 265 NATO-affiliated staff and their families who arrived at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. While about 100 of these new arrivals will make Nova Scotia their new home, the remainder will disperse to various communities across Canada.
From Temporary Havens to Permanent Homes
These Afghan nationals have journeyed from a third country where they had temporarily sought refuge after departing Afghanistan. Their arrival in Canada marks a significant step in the nation's broader commitment to welcome 15,000 Afghan refugees through a dedicated humanitarian program.
Support Systems in Place
As government-assisted refugees, these individuals will receive comprehensive support from organizations like the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia. The Resettlement Assistance Program will aid them in:
- Securing permanent housing
- Enhancing language skills
- Navigating the Canadian job market
- Adapting to life in Canada
