Canada Expands Student Direct Stream to Seven Caribbean and Latin American Nations

Ottawa, July 9, 2021—As the world gradually recovers from the global pandemic, Canada's International Student Program stands poised to significantly contribute to the nation's economic revitalization. In a strategic move to expedite this process, Canada has announced an expansion of its Student Direct Stream (SDS) to seven additional countries in the Caribbean and Central and South America.

New Countries Eligible for SDS

Starting today, students residing in the following countries can apply for a study permit through the SDS, which promises faster processing times for eligible applicants:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Brazil
  • Colombia
  • Costa Rica
  • Peru
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago

Launched in 2018, the SDS facilitates quicker application processing by requiring applicants to submit comprehensive information upfront. This approach enables immigration officers to conduct thorough assessments and reach decisions more swiftly.

Commitment to International Education

With this latest expansion, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) now offers the SDS to students in a total of 14 countries. This move aligns with Canada's International Education Strategy (2019–2024), which seeks to attract a diverse cohort of international students from a wide array of source countries.

Navigating Travel Challenges

Despite the added convenience of the SDS, international students currently abroad may still face travel challenges when attempting to enter Canada. Reduced flight availability persists, and students must adhere to their designated learning institution’s COVID-19 readiness plan. This includes a 14-day quarantine requirement upon arrival.

Students are also mandated to submit their quarantine and vaccination details through the ArriveCAN app before traveling. However, there is good news for those who meet Canada's criteria as fully vaccinated travelers—they may be exempted from the quarantine requirement upon the discretion of a border services officer.

Looking Ahead

Canada's expansion of the SDS program underscores its dedication to fostering a robust and inclusive international education sector. By streamlining the study permit process, Canada reaffirms its commitment to welcoming a diverse range of students, enriching the cultural and educational landscape of the nation.

As the world continues to navigate the challenges of the pandemic, Canada's proactive measures in supporting international students remain a beacon of its long-term vision for educational and economic growth.
