Canada Celebrates Citizenship Week: A Journey to Becoming Canadian

May 23, 2023—Ottawa — Becoming a Canadian citizen stands as a significant milestone in the immigration journey, symbolizing the final step in becoming an integral part of the Canadian societal fabric. Each year, during Citizenship Week, Canada pays homage to its new citizens while celebrating the diverse tapestry that defines the nation—its rich history and vibrant culture.

Today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, officially launched Citizenship Week, which spans from May 22 to 28, 2023. Minister Fraser is set to commemorate this occasion by attending citizenship ceremonies across the nation, from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Vancouver, British Columbia. In these ceremonies, Canada will embrace thousands of new citizens.

The Significance of Citizenship Ceremonies

Citizenship ceremonies present an emotional and meaningful experience for participants, offering an opportunity to witness new Canadians achieve this proud milestone. These ceremonies allow reflection on the profound significance of citizenship, encompassing both the rights it grants and the responsibilities it entails. Citizenship represents a pledge to Canada and its people.

Nationwide Participation

All Canadians are encouraged to partake in the celebrations of Citizenship Week by attending ceremonies being held nationwide. For those unable to be physically present, a live stream will be available from Halifax on May 24. Public ceremonies also extend an open invitation for in-person attendance, fostering a collective celebration across the country.

Modernizing Citizenship Services

In recent years, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has made significant advancements in modernizing citizenship services. This includes the introduction of online testing, virtual citizenship ceremonies, and an online application tracker designed to keep applicants informed about their application status.

Achieving and Surpassing Goals

Canada takes pride in surpassing its citizenship targets over the past year, welcoming nearly 364,000 new citizens. Already, in the first three months of this year, 85,000 individuals have taken the oath of citizenship, with many more anticipated to join the Canadian family in the coming months.

As Canada continues to embrace new citizens, Citizenship Week serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring values and shared responsibilities that unite the nation. Through these celebrations, the country reaffirms its commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming society, one that cherishes and thrives on its diversity.
