Canada Introduces New Humanitarian Pathway for Sudanese Nationals Amid Ongoing Conflict

Ottawa, December 28, 2023—Amid escalating tensions and violence in Sudan, the Canadian government has expressed profound concern for the safety and well-being of the Sudanese people. Reaffirming its commitment to peace and stability, Canada has taken tangible steps to support those affected by the ongoing conflict.

Today, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the establishment of a new family-based humanitarian pathway. This initiative is designed to offer Sudanese and non-Sudanese nationals, who were residing in Sudan at the onset of the conflict on April 15, 2023, the opportunity to reunite permanently with their families in Canada.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this humanitarian pathway, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Family Connection: Must be a child of any age, grandchild, parent, grandparent, or sibling of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident currently living in Canada.
  • Support Agreement: The family member in Canada must agree to support the applicant and assist in their integration into Canadian society.

Further details about the application process will soon be available on the IRCC website, allowing potential applicants to prepare and submit their documentation.

Existing Measures and International Cooperation

This new pathway complements existing temporary immigration measures for Sudanese nationals in Canada who are unable to return home due to the conflict. It also supports family members of Canadians and permanent residents who fled Sudan and arrived in Canada before July 15, 2023.

Canada continues to collaborate with the international community and regional partners to advocate for a peaceful resolution to the Sudanese conflict. The government is providing significant international assistance, including:

  • Emergency Food and Nutrition Aid
  • Provision of Clean Water
  • Hygiene and Sanitation Services
  • Health and Protection Services

These efforts aim to address the urgent needs of those affected by violence and insecurity across Sudan.

A Commitment to Humanitarian Support

As the situation in Sudan remains precarious, Canada remains steadfast in its dedication to humanitarian support and conflict resolution. By facilitating family reunification and providing critical aid, the Canadian government underscores its commitment to global solidarity and human rights.

In the face of adversity, Canada’s proactive measures offer a beacon of hope for those yearning for peace and stability. As the international community watches, Canada's actions serve as a reminder of the profound impact of compassion and cooperation in addressing global crises.
