Canada Offers Support Amid Escalating Tensions in Lebanon
October 30, 2024—Ottawa—In the wake of escalating conflict and instability in Lebanon, marked by daily rocket and missile exchanges and air strikes between Israel and Hezbollah, the Canadian government remains steadfast in prioritizing the safety of Canadians in the affected region.
Today, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, unveiled a series of temporary measures aimed at assisting Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and their immediate family members who have evacuated Lebanon, as well as Lebanese nationals currently in Canada who are unable to return home due to the ongoing crisis.
Key Measures Announced
-
Eligibility for Open Work and Study Permits: Immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who evacuated Lebanon on or after September 29, 2024, can apply for open work permits, study permits, or status extensions at no cost. This support extends to spouses and dependents, irrespective of their nationality or whether they left on flights organized by Global Affairs Canada or through other means.
-
Support for Lebanese Nationals in Canada: Lebanese nationals residing in Canada with valid temporary resident status are also eligible to apply for open work permits, study permits, or status extensions without any fees.
These initiatives are designed to maintain family unity and provide a secure environment for Lebanese nationals to continue their education, gain employment, and reside safely in Canada.
Advisory and Processing Enhancements
The government continues to advise Canadians to avoid all travel to Lebanon, urging those currently in the region, including permanent residents and their families, to depart via commercial means when it is safe to do so.
To better serve those affected, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has expanded its capacity to process applications from the region, ensuring that requests from Canadians, permanent residents, and their families in Lebanon are handled with urgency.
For further details on eligibility criteria and application procedures, individuals are encouraged to visit the IRCC’s official website.
As the situation in Lebanon remains precarious, Canada stands committed to providing essential support and resources to those impacted, reaffirming its dedication to humanitarian assistance and international solidarity.
