Canada’s Commitment to Afghan Refugee Resettlement: A Focus on LGBTQ2 Support

June 3, 2022—Ottawa, Ontario – The Government of Canada is steadfast in its commitment to resettle at least 40,000 Afghan nationals with urgency and care. To date, a total of 14,645 Afghan refugees have found a new home in Canada, with numbers growing each week.

As Pride Month unfolds, Canada celebrates the resilience and diversity of individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and two-spirited (LGBTQ2). With a legacy of protecting vulnerable groups, Canada stands out as a global leader in resettling LGBTQ2 refugees. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by these individuals, Canada was among the pioneers in establishing a special humanitarian resettlement initiative tailored for vulnerable Afghans, including LGBTQ2 persons.

Collaborative Efforts to Support LGBTQ2 Refugees

In alignment with its humanitarian mission, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has partnered with the Rainbow Refugee Society through the Rainbow Refugee Assistance Partnership. This collaboration aims to:

  • Encourage Canadians to sponsor LGBTQ2 refugees
  • Bolster cooperation between LGBTQ2 organizations and the refugee sponsorship network

Initially, the partnership allocated 50 cost-sharing spaces annually for privately sponsored refugees. In response to the crisis in Afghanistan, this initiative expanded, offering an additional 150 spaces specifically for Afghan refugees between 2022 and 2024.

Acknowledging Vulnerabilities and Fostering Inclusivity

Canada is acutely aware of the distinct vulnerabilities faced by LGBTQ2 refugees and remains committed to facilitating their safe journey to a new life in Canada. The nation is grateful for the unwavering support and goodwill demonstrated by Canadians across the provinces, welcoming refugees into their communities with open arms.

For those interested in contributing to this humanitarian effort, there are various avenues to assist in making Canada a welcoming home for these individuals.

Continuing the Journey

As Canada continues to make strides in resettling Afghan refugees, it remains vigilant and proactive in addressing the needs of the LGBTQ2 community. This commitment not only embodies Canada's dedication to human rights but also strengthens the cultural fabric of the nation.

For media purposes, photos of previous arrivals are available in Dropbox. Progress updates on the resettlement of Afghan refugees can also be monitored, ensuring transparency and continued public engagement in this vital initiative.
