Canada Extends Support to Sudanese Nationals Amidst Sudan Conflict

April 29, 2023—Ottawa — As violence escalates in Sudan, Canada reiterates its call for peace and expresses deep concern for the safety of individuals affected by the ongoing conflict. In response, the Canadian government is implementing measures to assist Sudanese nationals seeking refuge, including those already residing in Canada who may be hesitant to return to their homeland.

Special Measures Announced

Today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, unveiled comprehensive measures to support Sudanese nationals currently in Canada. As of April 30, 2023, these individuals can:

  • Extend their stay or alter their status: Whether as visitors, students, or temporary workers, Sudanese nationals can apply for extensions or status changes without incurring any fees.
  • Obtain free open work permits: This initiative grants access to the Canadian labor market, empowering Sudanese nationals to sustain themselves during their stay.

These provisions aim to safeguard the Sudanese community within Canada, ensuring family unity and providing a secure environment amidst the turmoil back home.

Facilitating Permanent Residency

Recognizing the challenges faced by some permanent residence applicants outside Canada who may lack access to Sudanese travel documents, the Canadian government is waiving the requirement for a passport or travel document for approval of permanent resident visas. This measure aligns with:

  • Fee waivers for passports and travel documents: Granted to Canadians and permanent residents in Sudan.
  • Prioritization of applications: Completed applications for temporary and permanent residence from individuals in Sudan are being expedited for processing when conditions permit safe travel.
