Canada Strengthens Support for Ukrainian Refugees with New Initiatives in Europe

Warsaw, Poland — May 4, 2022

The Government of Canada remains unwavering in its dedication to assisting Ukrainians and their families amidst the ongoing crisis. Since the inception of the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET), Canada has approved over 71,000 applications. Recognizing the potential concerns and inquiries that may arise following the submission of applications and biometric data, Canada is enhancing its on-ground services across Europe to better aid those seeking temporary refuge in the country.

Inauguration of the Canada Information Centre in Warsaw

In a significant development, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the opening of the Canada Information Centre (CI Centre) in Warsaw, Poland. This facility will provide in-person information services tailored for Ukrainian applicants. Situated within the newly established Canadian Biometric Operations Centre (CBOC) at the Global EXPO Centrum in Warsaw, the CI Centre is geared to offer critical information in Ukrainian, English, and French. It will guide applicants on expectations upon arrival in Canada, including pre- and post-arrival services and support.

Expanding Biometric Operations

During his visit to the Global EXPO Centrum, Minister Fraser toured the CBOC, which was inaugurated on April 19, 2022, to meet the rising demand for biometric appointments from Ukrainians and their families aiming to travel to Canada. In tandem with this, a second temporary centre was launched today in Berlin, Germany, with the capability to process up to 1,000 biometric enrolments daily. Collectively, these two new centres, alongside the expanded capacity across the visa application centre network, have elevated Canada's biometric processing capacity in the European Union to approximately 6,600 appointments daily.

Acknowledgement of Collaborative Efforts

Minister Fraser also extended his gratitude to the Canadian Armed Forces and the Polish Defense Forces, who are playing a crucial role at refugee reception centres, assisting Ukrainians fleeing the large-scale Russian invasion. He further commended the relentless efforts of staff from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Global Affairs Canada.

Ongoing Commitment to Ukrainian Refugees

As Ukrainians continue to valiantly defend their nation against the destructive aggression led by the Russian regime, Canada reaffirms its commitment to offering refuge to displaced Ukrainian families. The Canadian government is actively exploring new avenues to support these individuals and families throughout their journey — from the moment they express interest in Canada to their integration and settlement.

This initiative underscores Canada's enduring promise to stand by Ukraine and its citizens during these challenging times, ensuring a compassionate and comprehensive approach to humanitarian relief and support.
